Croatia in world’s top 5 for beer consumption

Croatians 5th in the world for beer consumption

Croatia has been ranked among the top five beer-consuming countries in the world, according to the latest global statistics for 2023, HRT writes.

With an average annual beer consumption of 94.2 litres per person, Croatia has secured 5th place globally, outperforming several countries with long-established beer traditions, including Germany and Poland.

At the top of the list is the Czech Republic, which continues to lead the world with an impressive 152.1 litres per capita, reaffirming its status as a global beer powerhouse.

Austria follows in second place with 106.5 litres, while Lithuania, known for its rapidly growing beer culture, claims third with 103.3 litres. Ireland, with its iconic pub culture, comes in fourth at 100.6 litres per person.

Trailing closely behind Croatia is Spain with 93 litres, Estonia with 92.6 litres, and Germany in eighth place at 88.8 litres per capita.

Rounding out the top 15 are several Central and Eastern European nations, including Romania (84.4 l), Slovenia (84.1 l), Latvia (83.8 l), and Poland (83 l). These figures highlight the region’s strong beer-drinking heritage and enduring traditions.

Outside of Europe, Panama (81 l) and Mexico (79.8 l) are the only two non-European countries to make the top 15, joined by Bulgaria (80 l) on the European front.

The dominance of European countries on this list—12 out of the top 15—emphasises the continent’s deep-rooted beer culture.

In Croatia, the popularity of beer continues to grow, driven by a growing craft beer scene, popular beer festivals, and the social culture of enjoying beer in good company.
