A new initiative aiming to highlight the unique charm and authenticity of Croatia’s private accommodation sector has been officially unveiled.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, together with the Croatian National Tourist Board, has launched the “Vaš domaćin” (Local Host) badge—a mark of recognition for exceptional hosts providing authentic, high-quality experiences in private accommodation.

The label is intended to promote Croatian family-run accommodation that exemplifies traditional hospitality, a hallmark of the country’s tourism identity. Minister of Tourism and Sports, Tonči Glavina, stressed the importance of preserving and showcasing this tradition.

“Private accommodation is a cornerstone of Croatian tourism. It offers tourists an authentic experience and is something that sets us apart from other destinations. With the ‘Local Host’ label, we aim to highlight this uniqueness and reward true hosts with added visibility on both domestic and international markets,” said Minister Glavina.

Simple Process, Strong Standards

The application process for the badge has been designed to be straightforward. Hosts can complete a self-assessment form through the eVisitor platform.

Those who meet the set criteria—such as authenticity, hospitality, environmental awareness, guest communication quality, and more—will receive a plaque to display at their accommodation, as well as a digital badge for use online.

According to Croatian National Tourist Board Director Kristjan Staničić, this is the first time that the promotion of family accommodation is being approached in a structured and comprehensive manner.

“Croatia has the largest share of private accommodation in its overall tourism offering. This initiative helps distinguish dedicated and passionate hosts from standard renters,” Staničić explained.

Two-Phase Rollout and Long-Term Vision

The project will be rolled out in two key phases. The first involves encouraging as many qualified hosts as possible to apply for the badge.

The second focuses on targeted promotion in key outbound markets, aiming to build the badge’s reputation as a symbol of trust and quality among guests.

The badge will be valid for three years. Hosts will need to undergo a fresh assessment before renewal to ensure consistent quality and adherence to standards.

Benefits for Hosts and Travellers Alike

Holders of the “Local Host” badge will gain a competitive advantage by being clearly recognised among a sea of private rentals.

They will appeal to guests seeking authentic and warm hospitality, and will be included in special promotional campaigns run by the Croatian National Tourist Board, including exposure on booking platforms and international markets.

The badge serves as a symbol of personal and high-quality service, designed to help guests easily identify accommodation providers who go the extra mile to offer a genuine Croatian experience.
