A new era has officially started for one of Zagreb’s sports venues – the stadium in Kranjčevićeva Street.

Today, the Mayor of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomašević, alongside Deputy Mayors Danijela Dolenec and Luka Korlaet, laid the foundation stone to mark the beginning of construction works.

“This is a historic day for Zagreb football,” said Mayor Tomašević.

“Since 1969, when the south stand of Maksimir was built, Zagreb hasn’t had a new stadium with four stands. For decades people have talked about it and many didn’t believe it would happen. But today, the work has begun. In 18 months, we will have a new stadium here in Kranjčevićeva, and by 2029, we will also have a new Maksimir.”

The new stadium will be a modern sports venue with a capacity of 11,163 seats, costing €38 million (excluding VAT), fully financed by the City of Zagreb. The main pitch will measure 105×68 metres, meeting UEFA Category 4 standards.

In addition to the football field, the project will include a new 6,300m² city square, parking for over 400 vehicles, and facilities for athletes and fans.

A major focus is on sustainability, with plans for a 1MW solar power plant, aiming to make the stadium largely energy self-sufficient.

“With this project, we are achieving three great things – starting an urban transformation of the whole district, creating an architecturally valuable building, and providing a top venue not just for sport but also for concerts and other events,” added Deputy Mayor Korlaet.

The Kranjčevićeva Stadium reconstruction is an essential first step before work can begin on tearing down and rebuilding the Maksimir Stadium. The new Maksimir is expected to be completed by early 2029 in cooperation with the Croatian Government.
